Touchpoint Cleaning and Why Every Workplace Should Be Taking It More Seriously

The Covid-19 pandemic forced a lot of businesses to look more carefully at how their buildings were being cleaned. And what most of them found was not great.
Floors were being hoovered. Bins emptied. Desks wiped down. The office looked clean. But the surfaces that dozens of people were touching every day? Often left untouched between morning and home time. That is where touchpoint cleaning comes in.

What is touchpoint cleaning, exactly?
It is the regular disinfection of the surfaces in your building that get the most contact throughout the day. Not a general once-over at the end of a shift. A focused, deliberate process that targets the spots people return to again and again without thinking.
Door handles. Light switches. Lift buttons. Stair rails. The coffee machine. Shared keyboards. The tap in the staff kitchen. The hand dryer button in the bathroom. These are surfaces that can be touched by a hundred different people before anyone gets around to cleaning them.
Some pathogens survive on hard surfaces for several hours. So there is a real window between one person leaving something on a surface and the next person picking it up. Touchpoint cleaning is what closes that window. Done consistently, it can remove up to 99.9% of the bacteria and viruses sitting on those surfaces. That is not a small number.
Why a standard clean does not cut it
Most people assume a clean-looking office is a safe office. It is not always.
A door handle can look perfectly fine and still be a problem. Germs are not visible. Giving a surface a quick wipe makes it look better. That is mostly it. If the product being used is not designed to kill bacteria on contact, you are not really disinfecting anything. You are just moving the dirt around a bit.

The thing is, the product matters just as much as the frequency. There is a real difference between a proper disinfectant and a standard cleaning spray. In a busy office, school or healthcare building, that difference shows up fast. At Archway Facilities, we use the right products for the job. Not just whatever smells clean.
Who actually needs this?
Most workplaces, honestly. But some more than others.
Offices are the obvious starting point. Shared kitchens, meeting rooms, and bathrooms. The number of contact points in even a small office is higher than most people realise. Schools are arguably worse. Children touch everything and think about it very little. The contact points in a primary school over the course of one day are genuinely staggering.
Healthcare settings are a separate conversation entirely. Hospitals, clinics and care homes already know the stakes. But even GP waiting rooms and dental practices benefit from having a proper touchpoint disinfection routine in place rather than a general clean.
Then there are gyms, co-working spaces, and reception areas. Any building where people come and go throughout the day is a building where touchpoint cleaning earns its keep.
For HR managers and wellbeing leads, there is also a softer reason to care about this. Staff notice when their workplace takes their health seriously. It changes how they feel about where they work. Fewer sick days is the headline, but the quieter benefit is that people feel looked after. That matters more than most employers realise.
This is not just a post-pandemic habit.
A lot of businesses brought in stricter cleaning routines during Covid and dropped most of them when restrictions lifted. Understandable. But the routines worked. And flu, norovirus and other bugs were always there before Covid came along and will keep coming back now that it has gone.
Workplaces that clean properly tend to have fewer sick days. Fewer sick days mean less disruption, better output and lower costs. The pandemic just made people pay attention to something that was always worth doing.
How we do it at Archway Facilities
Touchpoint cleaning has been part of how we work since before it became a talking point. We do not treat it as an add-on. It goes into every contract.
We look at how your building is actually used. Where do people go most? What do they touch first thing in the morning? What is still being used at five in the afternoon? From there, we put together a cleaning schedule that fits around your hours and your team, not a generic template.
For busier buildings, some surfaces get cleaned more than once a day. That is just the reality of high-traffic environments, and we plan for it from the start.
We work with offices, schools, healthcare settings, and commercial buildings across the region. Every site gets a proper look before we agree on anything.
